My approach with young people and families
I understand that most young people do not seek out counselling on their own and that it’s often parents or carers who instigate therapy. Confidentiality is especially important for young people though and I must adhere to my ethical standards as a mental health professional. With this in mind, I try to keep parents/carers informed of the general issues we’re working on and try to provide strategies for practice at home. In my initial intake assessment I take time to talk to the parent/carer (if appropriate) and the young person to have a clearer picture of what’s going on and how I can help.
How do I get the most out of young people?
I understand that young people find it difficult to share and express their thoughts and feelings and am very adept at building rapport and making them feel comfortable.
Young people require a more individualized approach to therapy as they grow and change so rapidly. An intervention that you would use with a 12 year old may be inappropriate for a 16 year old. I have an expansive knowledge of interventions for different developmental stages and am able to quickly get a feel for what is going to be effective for each particular young person.
I currently work in a school environment and have a great understanding of the issues that arise for young people. I am happy to collaborate with school wellbeing staff and pass on any strategies that may improve your child’s performance and engagement.
Most people feel that therapy is going to be a serious, solemn process. Sometimes it can be challenging, however, I really try to create opportunities for playfulness and humour. Therapy is more than ‘talking about your feelings‘ it’s about savouring happy moments and discovery, and I try to help young people embrace that throughout our sessions.
